 About Us

I thought I would take a moment and introduce myself, my family and a bit o' history of my longtime devotion and love of animals.
SBAcres did not begin one day on a whim, but over 30 years ago in the small town of Duluth, Minnesota. Duluth is way up north (on a US map, it's on the tip of what I jokingly call the finger of God) on the banks of Lake Superior where it has been said that Duluth is Air Conditioned year round with only a day or two of warmth.. My first memories were of my furry Nanny, a gorgeous black German Shepherd (GSD) named Duchess, who spent day and night keeping me safe and happy, not to mention giving snow sled rides. Duchess was bred by the Monks of New Skete and had a gentle disposition and was fiercely loyal until the day she died. From as far back as I can remember, I have never been without a GSD except for my teenage years when I moved to South Florida. Those early years taught me many things, including respect for animals, kindness and a strong desire to work with and raise animals. My family thought I was crazy, but I have always wanted to be back on a farm, surrounded by critters & family. <wry grin>

When I was in my 20's, I had been married to my best friend, Scott, for over a year and was blessed with a daughter was is truly a joy to us and ever so willing to help. ( I seem to have infected her with my deep love of critters) It took awhile to talk my husband, Scott (who, although liked animals, was not wanting to get attached due to the loss of his dog years before), into even getting a cat which we did 6 months later after moving back from San Diego, CA where he was stationed. So, long story short, we got our Hymie and now have 3 indoor cats. :-) A few years later, Scott met and fell in love with an AWESOME black GSD, who, to this day, works as a Service & Therapy Dog in North Florida. Needless to say, I talked him into getting a GSD and we slowly grew to have a small kennel, Vom Roschenhaus. I happily spent my time, training and working with K-9's, showing in Conformation and breeding GSD's. God blessed me with mentors who taught us the ins and outs of working with GSD's and responsible breeding for an all around exceptional GSD, bred to work in many fields and be structurally correct and able to title in the Conformation ring. Sadly, in 2002, I started to have heart and general health scares, and so my husband and I eventually came to the decision that I needed to slow down due to the high stress that competing and breeding of dogs require in the show world. That was when we first found out about Myotonic Goats.

We have several types of animals on our mini-ranch but the most interesting and amusing would be our Faintin' goats....... Now, to be completely honest, our introduction to a what was said to be a "fainting goat" did not end without a deep chuckle and a deeply embarrassed red face to this day! My hubby had been working at the University of Florida for a short bit, when a newly made acquaintance told Scott that he had a herd of goats. "How cool" we thought!!!!! (although we both grew up around dairy goat ranches we never really goat involved or learned much about them) Then this guy told Scott that his goats just fell over at the drop of a hat and that they had always done this. Well, this is where it gets a bit embarrassing for Scott.... :-) Scott told this guy that he had VERRRRRYYYYY SICK goats and that they had major health problems, and well, needed to get them to a Vet, IMMEDIATELY. Needless to say, Scott was a bit confused as to why this guy was laughing and no matter what he said to Scott, he still felt that goats couldn't faint without having some disease or something.....

Through this first introduction, we started doing research trying learn more about these "faintin' goats." You can just imagine how the breeders we spoke to, laughed over what Scott had said to his friend when told about Myotonic goats. Now understanding what Myotonia is and how it is displayed, we feel a bit bashful over Scott's initial reaction on hearing about this unique breed. So we got 2 meat wethers from that guy at work and later brought home a few goats, the beginning of our herd. At first we thought we'd have just a couple of goats and then that turned into a desire for meat & a bit of milk for drinking and cheese-making, which required MORE does, which we got. So, we said, okay maybe 10 goats or so. <chuckle> We've had as many as 30 goats but are taking the number back down to just 8 goats.

In addition to our goats, we also have a Great Pyrenees, 4 Pomeranians, barnyard cats, roaming chickens and a stunning Half-Arabian mare, Jade Sienna Del Sol whose pedigree is absolutely amazing! I will be posting info about her soon including her extentive & impressive bloodlines and pictures. She is truly a character but also has a sweet heart of gold :o)

Our original dreams of having just an acre or two of country has turned into future dreams of one day living on quite a bit of acreage, somewhere cooler & less humid than Florida. Our goals are for Scott to finish his Doctorate at the University of Florida over the next few years. Not only do we wish to have a larger herd of goats, but we also want to begin working with horses again and are planning on purchasing several Arabian mares after researching and buying what we believe to be perfect for us, our training goals and future breeding.

There is so much more I could share but lack the time to do so, but I will try to share just a bit more about us before I end this introduction..... I am a Home school Mommy and so when I am not working with an animal or animal chores (SOOOOOOO many animal chores,) I am spending my time teaching my girls, 11 and 9 years old, working on the computer (one of my growing hobbies,) trying to keep my husband going with his busy schedule and trying to keep the house clean! ( OH Dream the Impossible Dream!) <wry grin> Scott, my best friend/husband and a retired Navy boy, is back in school, at UF, with a full/heavy class load in one the toughest programs out there, finishing his Masters and later his Doctorate, while working a full time job the University of Florida (UF), helping me out at home and trying to catch moments to be the great daddy and hubby that he is for us!

I have enjoyed sharing a bit about us and we thank you for stopping by! Please feel free to look around our web-site as we have tons of information about Myotonic Goats, Dogs and more, not to mention TONS of pictures. Too many cool pages to list here!
